How to Choose a Rug Size for Your Living Room

The most common rug mistake we see is buying a rug that’s too small. A small rug floating in the middle of the room makes the space feel smaller and the furniture look disconnected. Here’s how to get the size right.

Measure the room first

Measure the room and the main seating area, then use painter’s tape to mark the rug’s outline on the floor. Living with the tape for a day or two tells you more than any chart.

As a rule of thumb, leave about 12 to 18 inches of bare floor between the rug and the walls. In a smaller room, 8 to 10 inches works.

Three ways to place a living room rug

1. Front legs on the rug (most popular)

The front legs of the sofa and chairs sit on the rug and the back legs sit on the floor. This anchors the seating group without needing a huge rug. In most living rooms this means an 8×10.

2. All legs on the rug

Every piece of furniture sits fully on the rug, which feels the most luxurious and works well in large or open-plan rooms, where the rug defines the living area. This usually takes a 9×12 or larger.

3. Coffee table only

A smaller rug sits under the coffee table with no furniture on it. It suits very small spaces, but in most rooms it looks undersized, so we only recommend it when nothing else fits.

Quick size guide

  • 5×8 or 6×9: small living rooms, apartments, reading corners
  • 8×10: the most common living room size; works with a standard sofa and two chairs
  • 9×12: larger living rooms, sectionals, or all-legs-on placement
  • 10×13 and up: great rooms and open floor plans

The rug should also be wider than your sofa, ideally by at least 6 inches on each side.

Other rooms

  • Dining room: the rug should extend at least 24 inches past the table on every side, so chairs stay on the rug when pulled out. A 6-seat table usually needs an 8×10.
  • Bedroom: a queen bed takes an 8×10; a king, a 9×12. Place the rug under the lower two-thirds of the bed so you step onto it when you get up.
  • Hallway: choose a runner that leaves 4 to 6 inches of floor showing on each side and a little at each end.
